Ubud’s Best Yoga and Pilates Studios: The Definitive Guide

Yoga & Pilates Classes in Ubud

Ubud is one of the world’s centres for yoga practice – not just for seasoned yogi’s but also for holidaymakers who just want to try yoga for the first time.

For many, this first-time experience is so inspirational it leads to a passion for yoga that continues when they return home, making it a life-transformational experience.

Of course, Yoga itself is transformational, but experiencing it in such a tranquil, inspiring setting as Ubud on the magical island of Bali will be sure to make an indelible impression on you.

Balinese & Western-Run Yoga Studios in Ubud

We have separated the best Ubud yoga classes into two groups:

There are several Balinese-operated yoga studios in Ubud that we’d like to highlight as wonderful options to give you a very authentic Balinese experience to your yoga practice.

Following this selection is a list of the western-owned/operated Ubud yoga studios – founded by noted western yoga teachers or business owners some of which also mix it up with local teachers taking some classes.

When choosing your classes, why not combine a few classes from each of local-run and western-run studios to add depth and breadth to your yoga experience?

Here are a few pointers to get the most from this guide:

  • Our list only includes studios with casual or ‘drop-in’ classes as these tend to be the experiences our guests seek. Ubud also has a number of ashrams and centres for intensive residential yoga retreats and yoga teacher training that are not included here.
  • As most studios often change their class schedules and styles of yoga available as they rotate international teachers, we have included a link to each website so you can choose your preferred class.
  • We have also included a link to the TripAdvisor listing for each studio, so you can read real reviews from other travelers to help you select classes. Studios are listed in alphabetical order.
  • To find each location on the map, go to the map and open the side slide menu to reveal the full list and click on a choice. Alternatively, click on a number on the map to open the side menu and details for that studio.

We also have a quick run-down for first-timers of the different yoga styles you will see when you read the class schedules – this will help you choose the right class for you.

UBUD YOGA STUDIOS MAP

Below is a map showing the location of each of the yoga and Pilates studios in Ubud detailed in this guide:

INTRODUCTION TO YOGA STYLES TO HELP YOU CHOOSE THE RIGHT CLASS

Many first-time visitors to Ubud have not tried Yoga before and Ubud is the perfect place for beginners to explore this incredibly relaxing and invigorating practice. Yoga is a set of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India but in each centre around the world, local culture and practice gives it a unique spin and the Balinese have combined ancient Indian styles that would have come with the migration from India to Bali in the Mahajapit era with their own cultural and healing practices.

There are several main styles of yoga (and many more variants on these styles) and most of these main styles are offered in the yoga studios in Ubud. But which do you choose? Here is a quick guide that will help you choose your first class.

Yoga for Beginners

Many studios offer ‘Yoga for Beginners’ classes and this is the best choice for first-timers. These classes may be a blend of yoga styles, or the studios predominant style, and the instructor will usually share the principles behind yoga as part of the class so you can get a good feel for the range of yoga experiences.

Ashtanga

Based on ancient yoga teachings and popularised in the west in the 1970s by guru K. Pattabhi Jois is a rigorous form of yoga, similar to Vinyasa but where a specific sequence of postures are linked to breath. Expect to work hard.

Bikram

Developed 30 years ago by Bikram Choudhury, a set of 26 poses are undertaken in set order in an artificially heated room. Expect to sweat.

Hatha

Hatha is a more generic term to represent a form of yoga that teaches a range of basic postures. This is the perfect choice for beginners. Expect to feel taller, looser and more relaxed.

Hot Yoga

Generally the same experience as Bikram but with some deviations from the strictly prescribed (and patented) Bikram Yoga style.

Iyengar

Devised by B.K.S. Iyengar, this is a meticulous style of yoga with an emphasis on proper alignment. So, these classes will use blocks, straps, bolsters, etc as part of the class. Because the training for this style of yoga is meticulous and the poses so exact, this is the best yoga for those with pre-existing injuries because instructors will start the class asking if anyone has a condition and you should get some individualised guidance duing the class.

Kundalini

Kundalini yoga is equal parts physical and spiritual and focuses on releasing the Kundalini energy that is said to be trapped or coiled in the base of the spine. So, the focus is on your core, with vigorous movements and breath and can also incorporate chanting, mantra and meditation.

Vinyasa

Vinyasa is a flowing form of yoga, with fluid, movement-intensive practices and transitions between poses with breath linked to each. Music is often used as part of the process, not just as a pleasant background. The intensity is similar to Ashtanga, but without the set sequence so no two classes are the same – perfect for those who like to be tested and surprised.

Yin or Restorative

Uttlerly divine, relaxing and calming, Yin yoga uses blocks, bolsters and blankets to place you in each passive pose so you can experience the benefits of that pose without physical exertion. These classes are often in an evening and are the perfect way to recover from a busy day.

Pilates

Pilates is a total body exercise, developed almost one hundred years ago by Joseph Pilates, to rehabilitate injured WW1 soldiers. Later it became popular for building strength and conditioning of dancers. It was popular with the elite in New York in the 1960’s and has now become more widely available. There are a large range of styles, from classic to contemporary and hybrid classes that combining Pilates with other disciplines including yoga and even boxercise.
